If you have a car an excursion to the summit of Mount Wellington is a must. The views of the city from here are spectacular and on a clear day you can see half of Tasmania.

Hobart Shuttle Bus (tel 0408 341 804) leaves the city centre for Mt Wellington Mon–Fri 10.30am & 1.30pm, Sat 1.30pm, Sun 10.30am & 1.30pm. The return fare is $30 and the one-way fare (for hikers making the two and a half hour walk to the base of the mountain) is $20.

Worth the drive up - or better still book the bus.

Bring something warm as it can get really really windy at the top and there is not much shelter. Worth the drive up the mountain to see the beautiful views of Hobart.

Stellar view. Be careful going up - the roads are narrow and winding. Only a 30 minute drive from the city center.

For self drive, do check the City of Hobart website for road closures. If not you can book a shuttle service in Hobart Travel Centre

Love the view but would recommend driving up. It's a long steep walk uphill

The road up may be closed when snow is forecast; do call ahead to check and avoid disappointment. Near the top there is a nice spot to look out on southern Tasmania. We saw a rainbow!

Always check the forecast! If precipitation is above 40%. There's a high chance of heavy snowfall up the peak.

It's 1270 metres above sea level so always take a jacket. It's never going to be hot up there.

Be prepared for your auto car locking to fail. Signs in visitors centre explain why and numbers for help if needed. Happened to us.

From Hobart, the most distinctive feature of Mount Wellington is the cliff of dolerite columns known as the Organ Pipes. Amazing to see up close.

This is the sort of road where the sign says in one part - beware rock (singular) falls. One rock the size of a car had fallen on the road.

Middle of summer but minus 2 with wind - take a jacket and gloves. Stunning views. Gorgeous small alpine flowers.

Walk to the Octopus Tree. It only takes 15 minutes and it is really lovely.
