Watered primarily by the Murrumbidgee River, this area produces citrus and stone fruits, vegetables, wines, rice, canola, wheat, sheep, cattle, pistachio nuts, olives and much more. The fertile farmlands have attracted migrants from many nations, creating a surprising and eclectic mix of cuisines and cultures.

Fruit picking work draws most backpackers here. There is work at most times throughout the year, but December to April is the busiest period when work is easiest to find.
