Perth Mint

You are here Home  > Western Australia  > Perth >  Perth Mint

The Perth Mint was established as a branch of Britain’s Royal Mint in 1899 and continues to produce coins and gold bars. The impressive building on Hay Street features a museum with displays about the production of coins and gold bullion with exhibits that provide a unique insight into how money is made.

One of the Perth Mint’s highlights is the world’s largest and most valuable gold coin, which is valued at over $50 million and measures 80cm across (and 12cm deep) and is made of one tonne of pure gold.

They weren't printing at the time so we skipped the formal tour. There's a small exhibit back by the cafe where you can see medals made for the Sydney olympics. That's free ;)

The tour was enjoyable! Not sure if it was worth the money, but definitely awesome to see how real gold was melted into a bar

One tour every hour from 9:30 - 3:30. They say it lasts 45 minutes, but I was there for an hour. Renovations are going on and they discounted the $15 price to $10. More about gold than coins.

The gold coins are sold for more than the value of the gold.
