The Federation Square branch of the National Gallery of Victoria is devoted to Australian art. This gallery features a programme of temporary exhibits plus a permanent collection that includes many of the most well-known examples of early Australian art including Frederick McCubbin’s The Pioneer (1904), Tom Roberts’ Shearing the Rams (1890) and John Brack’s The Bar (1954) and Collins Street, 5pm (1955).

    One of the must see in Melbourne - I love the mix of paintings, photography, design furnitures and sound systems. You got all your senses engaged. The building itself is already a reason to see it.

    The Great Exibition by Patrick Pound was actually more than great. Some navigation guides within the gallery, especially for the 2nd floor, will make the experience much more pleasant.

    Good collection of national artists on lower floors, though I preferred the modern works on the upper floors. Impressive building architecture too —modern yet not overwhelming.

    Don't skip the Joseph Brown Collection on Level 2. Filled with beautiful Australian Art - great to see John Brack, Sidney Nolan, Fred Williams, Rupert Bunny, Margaret Preston, E.Phillips Fox etc..
