The Western Plains Zoo is Australia’s first open range zoo and one of the countries best zoos. The zoo was established to provide open spaces for – mostly African – animals that need more extensive grounds than could be provided in city zoos. It is home to 82 different species. Although the zoo has a focus on African wildlife, there are animals from around the world including many native Australian animals. There are extensive cycling and walking paths around the zoo. The zoo covers around 300 hectares so renting a bike is probably the best way to see it.

Cycling around is great. Get there early to get a descent bike for hire. Animals can sometimes be a long way way (you might not see them at all..). Great that they have a lot of space though. 😐

Driving around? Try going after lunch. There's enough time to see everything, but sans crowds and cyclists, who all had to get there at 9am just to make it all the way around the place before closing.

Riding a bike around? Make sure you get there early to see everything, but be prepared to do battle against a thousand other cyclists & cars

2x free gas BBQs at the Asian forest picnic grounds. Great day out. Found presentations to be ok. Took own bikes in - BEST way to get around and enjoy the time.

Request the 'giraffe lodge' for up close views of these beautiful animals. 1 night stay is more than enough

The morning walk was rather a disappointment. The volunteers sounded like they are bored, did not tell much of interesting, and a couple of times were surprised about what's going on in the zoo.

The best zoo I've been to so far. You can drive through on a car or hire bike. But register for the shows in advance. Wish we could feed meerkats.

Our kids whistled to the giraffes when they were up the back and almost the whole herd turned and began walking towards us in response! May be a coincidence, but it's worth a try! We got great photos.

Worth getting there at 6.30am for the behind the scenes early morning walk. The giraffe encounter is also great value for $5 per person

In summer it gets real hot, for example today will hit 36+c. Arrive early and hire a bike, you will see all the zoo has to offer and if you start at 9am your going to be out of the afternoon heat.
