The Australian expression “back of Bourke” means a long way from anywhere and it is generally assumed that this is where the outback starts. Although Bourke is a remote town by anyone’s standards, it is the closest bit of outback to Sydney.
The area around Bourke is surprisingly fertile and there is quite a bit of fruit picking work (Nov–Feb) although there are nicer spots elsewhere in Australia for this sort of work.
