Mornington Peninsula

You are here: Home  > Victoria  > Around Melbourne  > Mornington Peninsula

The Mornington Peninsula, southeast of Melbourne, has a variety of beaches – both sheltered swimming beaches and surf beaches – and is a popular weekend getaway for Melburnians. Although part of Melbourne’s metropolitan area it maintains a separate identity and a laidback holiday atmosphere.

Sorrento is the most popular town on the Peninsula for backpackers. Apart from having a hostel, it is also a charming town that’s far enough from Melbourne to be considered a separate destination.

Coming and going and local transport

The Melbourne suburb of Frankston is easily accessible by train from Melbourne. From
Frankston you can transfer to buses down the Peninsula or the train to Stony
Point.

There are various bus routes on the Mornington Peninsula but bus 788 is the most useful
as it runs along the coast for the entire length of the Peninsula from Frankston to
Portsea.
