The Murray is one of Australia’s longest and most important rivers. It meanders 2,600km from the Snowy Mountains to Encounter Bay in South Australia. The river forms much of the New South Wales/Victorian border and it was once a busy transport route with paddle steamers plying their trade up and down the river.
The area around the Murray is fertile fruit farming country and many backpackers are attracted here by fruit picking work around Echuca and Mildura.
