Purnululu National Park is best known for the spectacular Bungle Bungles – a unique mountain range with the appearance of an upside-down egg carton. The Bungle Bungles are best experienced by a scenic flight, although this can get a little too pricey for most backpackers.
You will need a 4WD vehicle to actually explore the national park from the ground and for most people this means an even more expensive 4WD tour. Several companies in Kununurra, including Kununurra Backpackers organise 4WD tours for the Bungle Bungles. If you have access to a 4WD you can get to the trailhead of a number of hiking tracks including hikes to Cathedral Gorge, Echidna Chasm and the longer overnight hike to Piccaninny Gorge.
The park is closed during the wet season (Jan–Mar). The park entry fee is $12 per vehicle.
