There are several supermarkets in Melbourne’s city centre, but Aldi is the cheapest. This supermarket is convenient if you’re staying in some of the hostels at the northern end of the CBD including Discovery Melbourne, Elizabeth Hostel, Nomads Industry and Space Hotel.

Alice Springs Airport (ASP)
Alice Springs Airport, 15km south of town, has direct flights to most major cities in Australia.
Some hostels arrange pick-ups from the airport, particularly if several people book in advance, otherwise the best way into town from the airport is by the airport shuttle bus (tel (08) 8953 0310) that meets most flights. It will drop you off at your hostel and costs $15. A taxi will cost about twice this, but may work out better value between a few people.
Alice Springs Cultural Precinct
The Alice Springs Cultural Precinct has a number of attractions including the Aviation Museum and the Museum of Central Australia.
Alice Springs Desert Park
Run by the NT Parks & Wildlife Commission, the Alice Springs Desert Park portrays the wildlife and plants that thrive in the harsh Central Australian landscape. The park features three different desert habitats with over 400 different types of plants and more than 120 different species of animals. There is also an exhibition centre and an area with rare and endangered nocturnal animals.

The Ghan is one of Australia’s great train journeys and it stops in Alice en route from Adelaide to Darwin. Alice Springs train station is on George Terrace, about a 20-minute walk from the town centre.

Amphibious LARC trips
1770 LARC Tours have a couple of pink amphibious vehicles that they use to run day tours to Eurimbula National Park, Bustard Head Light Station and Middle Island. Day tours cost $155 and the shorter afternoon cruises are $38.
Anzac Hill
This is the best spot to watch the sun set over Alice Springs. You can get here by walking the Lions Walk trail, which is accessible via Wills Terrace.
Apollo Bay coach stop
V/line coaches go to Geelong and Warrnambool via the Great Ocean Road. Coaches stop outside the Visitor Information Centre on the Great Ocean Road.
Aquascene
Darwin’s most unique and fun attraction involves feeding the fish that arrive at each high tide at a small bay in Doctors Gully at the northern end of the city centre. Thousands of milkfish, mullet, catfish and barramundi as well as stingrays come to be handfed.
AQWA
AQWA is home to a large variety of marine life and it features several areas that recreate various marine environments. AQWA is Australia’s largest aquarium and it also boasts the country’s biggest walk-through underwater tunnel.
Arid Lands Botanic Gardens
The Arid Lands Botanic Gardens is a unique park north of the town centre that showcases a range of plant-life that thrives in desert conditions. The gardens also include a research centre and information centre.
Armidale bus and coach stop
Armidale is connected by coaches to Brisbane, Sydney and other towns in New England and along the north coast. The coach station is located at the information centre on Marsh Street.

Art Gallery of Ballarat
Australia’s first provincial art gallery has an impressive collection of early Australian art including collections from the Colonial and Heidelberg Schools.

The Art Gallery of South Australia has a good collection of Australian and European paintings, although it is not quite up there with the galleries in Canberra or Melbourne.
