Melbourne Airport (MEL)
Melbourne International Airport (MEL), is in Tullamarine 21km north of the city centre. This airport handles all international flights and most domestic flights.
The cheapest way to travel between the airport and the city centre is by public transport, which involves taking a suburban train to Broadmeadows (on the Craigieburn line) and then transferring to bus 901 to the airport. Both the train and bus run every 30 minutes and you should allow at least an hour and 10 minutes for the journey. The one-way fare is $3.76.
Skybus is the quickest and easiest way to get to and from the airport with buses departing right outside the main airport terminal and the trip between the airport and the city centre taking only 35 minutes. Skybus run frequent airport bus services to the Southern Cross coach terminal on Spencer Street in the city centre with services running 24 hours every 15 minutes during the day ($18 one-way). Between 7am and 6pm Skybus provide a complimentary shuttle service between the Southern Cross coach terminal on Spencer Street and to backpackers hostels and hotels in the city centre.
A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs between $45 and $55.
Melbourne Museum
Situated behind the Royal Exhibition Buildings, Australia’s largest museum contains some excellent exhibits with a good selection on local and natural history. The museum contains a lot of new exhibits and is divided along different themes with Australian history, Aboriginal and Pacific Island culture, science and natural history. Highlights include Australia’s first – and the world’s fourth – computer (with a massive 2KB RAM) plus a set from the TV show Neighbours. The complex also houses an IMAX theatre.
Melbourne Visitor Centre
Mengler Hill Lookout
Although Mengler Hill Lookout is not a huge must-see attraction, this lookout, located east of Tanunda offers sweeping views of the Barossa Valley. It’s a pretty steep hill and a hard ride if you’re cycling so you really need your own car to get here however many of the day tours to the Barossa also visit this lookout.
Merimbula Airport
Rex has daily flights from Merimbula Airport to Melbourne and Sydney. The airport is close enough that you can walk the 25 minutes to the YHA hostel (a little longer to get to the town centre).
Merimbula bus and coach stop
Premier Motor Service coaches run to Melbourne and Sydney and NSW TrainLink coaches stop in Merimbula en route between Canberra and Eden.

Mid North Coast Maritime Museum
Mid North Coast Maritime Museum is much like other maritime museums around Australia and it includes the usual collection of model ships and all things nautical. Visitors can take a cruise on some of the museum’s historic boats.
Migration Museum
Adelaide’s Migration Museum is a fascinating museum with exhibits about people who have migrated to and settled in South Australia.
Mildura Airport (MQL)
Mildura Airport (MQL) is 11.5km (6½ miles) southwest of the city centre and has several flights a day to Adelaide, Broken Hill, Melbourne and Sydney.
Rex, Qantas and Virgin Australia fly to Melbourne and Rex also has flights from Mildura to Adelaide, Broken Hill and Sydney.
Mildura Brewery
The Mildura Brewery is a good place to drink. The food is a bit overpriced, but it has a good ambience.
Mildura coach station
V/line coaches go to Ballarat, Bendigo, Melbourne and Swan Hill and NSW TrainLink coaches go to Hay and Griffith. Both NSW TrainLink and V/line coaches depart from the old train station on Seventh Street.
Please note: Greyhound coach services depart from a different coach stop next to the tourist information centre on 12th Street.
Mildura Visitor Information and Booking Centre
Mindil Beach Sunset Market
Darwin’s Mindil Beach Sunset Market is one of Australia’s top markets with an excellent selection of food stalls plus the usual art and craft items.
Mirima (Hidden Valley) National Park
This small national park is only 2km from the centre of Kununurra and it offers similar features to the Bungle Bungles. Most travellers visit the park early in the morning before it gets too hot. It is a small park and two to three hours is sufficient time even if you walk every trail in the park.
Mission Beach bus and coach stop
Greyhound and Premier Motor Service coaches stop by the Big Cassowary at the Wongaling Shopping Centre near the Mission Beach Resort in Wongaling Beach.
Mission Beach Visitor Information Centre
Mitchell Street Transit Centre
Greyhound coaches terminate at the Mitchell Street Transit Centre, which is between Chilli’s and the Youth Shack. It is just a short walk to most of Darwin’s hostels.
Molly Malone’s
Molly Malone’s is an Irish pub on Flinders Street in central Townsville (close to Reef Lodge, the Museum of Tropical Queensland and Reef HQ) that has cheap pub meals that are popular with backpackers.
