Cataract Gorge

You are here Home  > Tasmania  > Launceston >  Cataract Gorge

Launceston’s major attraction is the spectacular Cataract Gorge. The gorge is about a 15-minute walk from the centre of Launceston and there are several lovely walks within the Cataract Gorge Reserve.

The reserve is also home to the Duck Reach Power Station, which was the first hydroelectric power station in the Southern Hemisphere when it was constructed in 1895.

Two car parks available, at the bottom and top of the gorge. Bottom is closer to the swimming pool and chairlift base station.

Two super easy 30 minute walks: cataract walk and basin loop. Or be lazy and take the chairlift!

Beautiful place – cable car, seal spotting, a good hike, peacocks, wallabies, perfect for a swim and a picnic.

It's interesting ride on cable car. Very nice scenery. Buy one way ticket only so you can enjoy more interesting animals like kangaroo, peacock, birds and so on by walking back.

Lovely little place with a world famous? Cable car. Probably better if a bit warmer. Hottest coffee ever in the cafe (hot as in I can't feel my mouth not the good kind of hot).

Nice walk around the First Basin, with lovely views on the north side. The walk up to Duck Reach is worth doing and you can also walk up to the Hoo Hoo Huts and Trevallyn Dam.
