Maryborough

You are here: Home  > Queensland  > Fraser Coast  > Maryborough

Maryborough is one of Queensland’s oldest cities and during its heyday in the late 1800s it was the east coast’s second most important port after Sydney. It once even rivalled Brisbane as the site for Queensland’s state capital.

This small city is the closest place to Hervey Bay that has a train station and you’ll have to stop here if you’re travelling by rail and want to visit Hervey Bay or Fraser Island.

Although Maryborough is a bustling little city and in many ways a much nicer place than Hervey Bay, there’s no backpackers’ accommodation or enough attractions to keep you busy for very long and most travellers get off the train and get the first bus to Hervey Bay.
