South Australia is Australia’s driest state and this is most evident when travelling in the outback. For most travellers, the outback is the vast expanse of red sand that you see from the bus window en route to destinations north and west of Port Augusta. In most cases the only places you’ll stop are the lonely roadhouses on the highway, although Coober Pedy on the Stuart Highway between Adelaide and Alice Springs is a popular and unique stop over.
If you’re travelling on one of the backpackers’ buses, you may take the Oodnadatta Track between the Flinders Ranges and Coober Pedy.
