Flinders Street Station

Flinders Street Station is the hub of Melbourne’s suburban rail network and for many years has been Melbourne’s major landmark. The clocks on the corner of this ornate station have been the favourite meeting place for generations of Melburnians.

V/line trains to Bairnsdale and the Latrobe Valley depart from here, but all other V/line rail services depart from Southern Cross Station.

Foodworks Magnetic Island

There are a couple of small supermarkets on Magnetic Island including a Foodworks at Nelly Bay.

Things are more expensive on Magnetic Island so you’ll save money if you stock up on a few things at the Coles or Woolworths in Townsville before getting the ferry to the island.

Fort Queenscliff

This coastal fortress was constructed in 1882 as part of an elaborate defence network around the Port Phillip Bay heads. Guided tours of the facility take around an hour and allow you to see the fort’s lighthouse and military instalments.

Galley Museum

Queenstown’s Galley Museum documents the history of life in Queenstown through photographic exhibits. The museum is housed in the old Imperial Hotel, which dates from 1897 and has been used as a hospital and as accommodation for workers at the Mount Lyell Mine.

Geikie Gorge National Park

Geikie Gorge National Park is around 17km north of Fitzroy Crossing and is worth a detour if you’re driving between Darwin and Broome, although it’s otherwise a bit difficult to get to if you’re travelling by coach.

The best way to explore the gorge is to take one of the cruises on the river, although there are also some good walks along the gorge and elsewhere in the national park. The gorge features some nice picnic and barbecue sites and is home to plenty of freshwater crocodiles.
