Mackay’s art gallery is host to a selection of temporary art exhibitions.
Ascot Stonegrill Restaurant & Hotel
The big draw in Rockhampton is the excellent steak and you will see signs for cheap steak dinners on virtually every street in the city centre. They are almost always a great deal as the steaks are exceptionally large. One highlight is the unassuming restaurant below Ascot Backpackers that is noted for its excellent stone grill steak and is a must if you’re staying at their hostel.

Transwa coaches stop on Blackwood Avenue in Augusta. Coaches connect Augusta with Nannup and Bunbury via Margaret River and Busselton.

Australia Zoo
Famed as the home of Steve Irwin, television’s Crocodile Hunter, Australia Zoo was established in 1970 and is now home to more than 750 animals. The park features a large range of animals with a strong focus on Australian animals including giant pythons, some of the world’s most venomous snakes, wild birds and native turtles and saltwater crocodiles.
Australia’s Industry World
Port Kembla, near Wollongong, is home to one of Australia’s highest concentrations of heavy industry. Australia’s Industry World consists of a visitors’ centre where tours depart for the nearby steel making and port facilities.
Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI)
The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is a museum dedicated to film and television with several exhibition galleries plus an archive of classic Australian film and television programmes. ACMI’s permanent collection includes exhibits about the history of the moving image from early cinema and television to internet memes with exhibits that include early televisions and home computers. The museum also hosts a programme of temporary exhibits.
Australian National Maritime Museum
An excellent maritime museum with exhibits which include the submarine HMAS Onslow.
Australian Sugar Heritage Centre
The Australian Sugar Heritage Centre is a unique museum that gives you the facts about the history of Australia’s sugar industry with exhibits explaining how fields of cane are processed into sugar.
The museum is located in Mourilyan, just south of Innisfail.
Australian War Memorial
This is the most impressive of Australia’s many war memorials. The memorial is home to a small museum with exhibits on Australia’s military involvement.
Avalon Airport (AVV)
Melbourne’s newest airport is Avalon (AVV), 55km southwest of Melbourne’s city centre near Geelong. At this stage Avalon only handles JetStar flights to Sydney.
Sita Coaches’ Avalon Airport Transfers coach service links Avalon with Melbourne city with stops at Southern Cross (Spencer Street) coach station. The one-way fare is $22.
Avalon Airport Shuttle links Avalon Airport with Geelong with the option drop offs and pick ups farther afield including the Bellarine Peninsula, Torquay and the Great Ocean Road. The one-way fare between Avalon Airport and Geelong is $18.
Axel Stenross Maritime Museum
This maritime museum is in the boat building workshop established by the Finnish boat builder, Axel Stenross. It features nautical exhibits with an emphasis on windjammer sailing boats.
Ayr bus and coach stop
Greyhound and Premier Motor Service coaches stop in Ayr on Graham Street.
Ayr train station
The Spirit of Queensland train stops at Ayr’s new train station on Railway Street en route between Brisbane and Cairns.
Back O’Bourke Exhibition Centre
The Back O’Bourke Exhibition Centre has displays about outback New South Wales including early explorers, bush poets, outlaws and the development of the grazing industry. It’s an excellent museum for such a small town.
Bairnsdale train station
V/line has train services to Melbourne and coaches to Canberra and Batemans Bay. The train station is on Macleod Street.

Ballarat train station
Ballarat has good transport connections. V/line have trains to Ararat and Melbourne and V/line coaches to other destinations including Bendigo and Geelong. Both trains and coaches depart from the train station on Lydiard Street North.
