In 1851 gold was discovered in Ballarat and within a few years there were thousands of miners trying their luck on the Ballarat goldfields. The city grew on the wealth of the gold rushes and Ballarat is now Victoria’s largest inland city.

Local transport

Ballarat’s local bus service has half-hourly departures to most parts of the city with most routes converging near Bridge Street Mall.

A one-way fare costs $2.20–3.80 and an all day ticket is $4.40–7.60. Local buses in Ballarat use the same Myki ticketing system that is used in Melbourne, which means that you can use your Myki ticket here.
