The region surrounding Bundaberg offers 140km of unspoilt coastline and glimpses of real Australian country life in small hinterland towns. Bundaberg is a good place to base yourself while exploring the area, as it is relatively cheap and there is plenty of accommodation. The city has nice Botanic Gardens and some attractive buildings, but it is mostly just used as a place to find fruit-picking work in the surrounding area or as a one night stopover before heading north.
Bargara, just 20 minutes east of Bundaberg, is a slow seaside getaway with a boardwalk and calm foreshore. Mon Repos is the most well-known beach for its hatchling turtles that you can see on summer evenings. Thirty minutes north is Moore Park Beach, where you can swim, surf and sailboard. This beach is also open to 4WD vehicles. Just a bit farther north is Miriam Vale Shire and the Discovery Coast, with excellent surf, national parks and estuaries.
