You can get a cheap hearty dinner at many of Rocky’s pubs. The Bush Inn Bar & Grill in the Criterion Hotel is a favourite with locals and visitors alike; they also usually have long happy hours, but the nightlife from there fizzles out, so stop by a bottle shop for beer if you want to make it a long night.

Ascot Stonegrill Restaurant & Hotel
The big draw in Rockhampton is the excellent steak and you will see signs for cheap steak dinners on virtually every street in the city centre. They are almost always a great deal as the steaks are exceptionally large. One highlight is the unassuming restaurant below Ascot Backpackers that is noted for its excellent stone grill steak and is a must if you’re staying at their hostel.

Watching turtles at Mon Repos Beach
If you’re visiting between November and March you should make a trip to Mon Repos Beach (15km from the town centre) to watch the loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. It is a great experience to see the baby turtles digging through the sand and making their way to the sea. You must make a booking with the tourist office (tel (07) 4153 8888) before you go as there are new regulations regarding the number of people allowed on the beach at a time, whether part of a tour or not. Your time of booking determines your time on the beach, so call early.
