Wollongong Train Station

The easiest way to get in and out of Wollongong is by train. The CityRail network covers the city and its surrounding area and there are frequent trains between Wollongong and Sydney as well as trains further south to Kiama and Nowra. The train from Sydney Central to Wollongong costs $8.60 one-way or $17.20 return.

Newcastle Airport (NTL)

Newcastle Airport is in Williamtown at the western end of Port Stephens. It is a fast-growing airport with flights to Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne. It is served by Jetstar, Qantas, Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue.

The bus between Newcastle Airport and the train station in the city centre costs $4.80.

Sydney Central Station

Central Station is Sydney’s hub for train travel with long-distance services departing upstairs (with coaches and trams stopping downstairs on Eddy Avenue). The station has all the facilities that you would expect including bars, shops, fast food outlets and lockers.

NSW TrainLink and CityRail both offer intercity train services although CityRail’s network extends only as far south as Goulburn and Nowra, west to the Blue Mountains and north to Newcastle and Scone. NSW TrainLink goes further afield within New South Wales and also runs a few interstate services (to Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne). The Indian Pacific to Perth (via Broken Hill and Adelaide) is a really long-distance train journey that is run by Great Southern Railway.

Broadmeadow train station

Broadmeadow station is the closest train station to Newcastle that is served by NSW TrainLink trains on the North Coast Region and North West Region lines. Trains from Sydney to Armidale, Brisbane, Casino, Grafton and Moree stop here.

Newcastle Buses route 226 runs between Broadmeadow station and the old Newcastle station in the city centre. You can also get trains from here to Hamilton Station with connecting buses into the city centre.

Katoomba train station

CityRail operate an hourly train service between Sydney Central station and the Blue Mountains with stops at Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls. The train from Sydney Central costs $8.60 one-way and $17.20 return. The journey takes two hours.

NSW TrainLink trains also stop at Katoomba en route to Dubbo and Broken Hill.
